In 2016, a federal law was passed that permitted Nurse Practitioners (NP) to prescribe Suboxone (buprenorphine).

However, whether or not a Nurse Practitioner can actually prescribe a controlled substance is depends on state law or legislation.  In states where NPs are allowed to prescribe controlled substances, the NP can complete a training course and become eligible to prescribe Suboxone (buprenorphine)  The NP must apply for a special waiver for the DEA license called a  X-waiver.  Once the NP has been granted this waiver, they may prescribe Suboxone (buprenorphine).
