How can I set doable goals in realistic terms?
Setting goals drives motivation. To set doable goals in realistic terms, follow these six guidelines for giving yourself the best chance at success.
1. A Doable Goal is Simple and Brief
That means your goal should be specific, like, “I will go to the gym five times this week.” The more simple your goals, the less overwhelming they may feel.
2. A Doable Goal is Positive
A doable goal dictates what you want to do rather than what you want to avoid. As opposed to saying, “I want to avoid my triggers,” make your goal, “I will ride out my urges." The positivity puts you back in the driver’s seat and allows you to regain control over your choices.
3. A Doable Goal is Measurable
By establishing a way to measure your goal, you hold yourself accountable. For example, consider the decision to go to group therapy three times a week. If you only went once, you did not achieve your goal and will be motivated to try again next week. However, had you set a non-measurable goal like just going to therapy, you allow yourself to achieve the bare minimum without pushing further.
4. A Doable Goal is Reasonable
When we set entirely unrealistic goals, like making amends overnight, we can quickly become discouraged. By setting achievable goals, we can work confidently towards them.
5. You're in Charge of a Doable Goal
A doable goal is one you have control over. Therefore, the success of your goal should rely on you. For instance, to rebuild a relationship, you need the willingness of your partner or loved one to succeed. Instead, set a goal of doing your part to prove you are reliable and trustworthy and leave the rest up to your loved one.
6. A Doable Goal Uses Your Skills
A doable goal relies on the skills you already have or are learning. Maybe you’re heading back to work or looking for new employment. As opposed to hunting for jobs that you don't know how to do, search for positions that can amplify your training and expand from there.
When we have doable goals, we’re more inclined to pursue them actively.
