The Dangers of Mixing Alcohol and Caffeine

The Dangers of Mixing Alcohol and Caffeine

Sometimes people think that if they drink caffeine, it will help them to feel less impaired or maybe even reduce the effects of alcohol. Unfortunately, that is not true.

Caffeine is a substance commonly found in coffee, energy drinks, and even in some chocolate! It is a stimulant, meaning that it can make you feel energetic and alert.

Alcohol, on the other hand, is a depressant, meaning that it can make you feel sleepy and/or less alert.

Why would you mix something that makes you feel tired with something that wakes you up? Sometimes people think that if they drink caffeine, it will help them to feel less impaired or maybe even reduce the effects of alcohol. Unfortunately, that is not true. Even if you feel more alert and awake afterwards, drinking caffeine will not change your blood alcohol level, will not change your breathalyzer readings if pulled over, and above all, will not sober you up. In fact, it could trick you into thinking that you were able to drink more alcohol than your body was capable of handling.

In addition, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that if you mix alcohol with high caffeine drinks, you may be at higher risk for sexual violence, unprotected sex, driving drunk, driving with someone who is drunk, and/or sustaining alcohol-related injuries.
