Nausea After Drinking: Causes and Remedies

Nausea After Drinking: Causes and Remedies

Follow these steps today to help you skip tomorrow's hangover.

It's not uncommon to feel tired, nauseous, or have a headache after a night of drinking. Drinking, especially in large amounts, can have several unpleasant side-effects that make the morning after less-than-fun. However, there are steps you can take before, during, and after a night out to feel more energetic and alert the next day. Feeling refreshed after a night of drinking begins before your first drink.

What to Do Before You Begin Drinking

Beginning your night on an empty stomach or with the wrong mindset can impact how much alcohol you consume and how quickly your body absorbs it. Before you start drinking, it's important to consume a meal rich in protein, fats, or carbohydrates. These nutrients help line your stomach, which means you won't absorb alcohol as quickly. Eating a meal can ensure you don't get intoxicated at a faster rate and can also make you pace your drinks throughout the night because your stomach is full.

Researchers discovered those who drink regularly produce endorphins, which translate into a desire to keep drinking, even if they've hit their limit. To combat that urge, you can take a medication like Naltrexone, the subject of more than 30 studies spanning the past two decades.

Naltrexone is a type of medication used to help individuals reduce the amount of alcohol they consume. It's safe and easy to use, especially if your night out wasn't planned. Simply take a dose of Naltrexone a half-hour before drinking or as a daily-use medication. The medication won't stop you from feeling the effects of the alcohol, but it will help you slow down and pace yourself.

Helpful Tips While You're Drinking

The decisions you make while drinking also influence how you'll feel the next day. While placing your drink order, opt for a light or clear liquor rather than darker ones. Dark liquor such as brandy or bourbon contains natural chemicals called congeners, which studies show irritate blood vessels and tissue in the brain to worsen how you feel later. Also, steer clear of sparkling wine such as champagne or prosecco, as the bubbles accelerate your alcohol consumption.

When choosing a beverage for the evening, ask for "top shelf" rather than "house", "bottom shelf" or "rail" liquors. Bottom shelf liquors live up to the name. They contain cheaper ingredients and can make a huge difference in how you feel in the morning. Likewise, choose your mixers wisely. Beverages with high sugar content can worsen a headache and nausea.

Be sure to have water in between drinks. Alcohol is a diuretic, which can have a dehydrating effect on your body and intensify a hangover.

Steps to Follow After a Night of Drinking

After a night of drinking, you must continue to hydrate. Not only will drinking water help combat the adverse effects of alcohol, but it will also flush out the chemicals drinking left behind. Drink at least one full glass of water before going to sleep.

First thing in the morning, take a shower. Since alcohol causes your blood vessels to expand, there's a chance you've gotten warm and sweated throughout the evening. Microscopic amounts of alcohol exit through your pores and your sweat may smell like it. Make your shower cold or lukewarm to wake you up.

After you've bathed, be sure to keep up your water intake and eat a nutritious breakfast. An egg-based, protein-filled meal and a nutrient-packed smoothie can help you feel more alert and ready to take on the day. Moderate exercise can make you feel better after a night of drinking, too.

Preparation for a night of drinking should begin hours before you take your first sip of alcohol. By planning ahead, choosing your drinks wisely, and remaining hydrated, you can wake up refreshed.
