The most common method for administering buprenorphine is sublingually. This means you are given a small pill or filmstrip which can be placed under your tongue. This is often referred to as the brand name Suboxone. Over the course of a few minutes, the buprenorphine will be absorbed through the fleshy membranes under your tongue and the tablet will eventually dissolve. This is much more effective than swallowing pills because buprenorphine is much less effective when absorbed through the intestine.
Another method of administering buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder is through a monthly injection, often known as the brand name Sublocade. The injection is given in the abdomen. There is also a buprenorphine implant that releases a constant dose of buprenorphine for six months, known as Probuphine. However because this requires a minor surgical procedure for implantation it is not currently available through Confidant.
