Treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) with buprenorphine has been shown to have significant positive outcomes and is more effective than treatment of OUD without medications. Treatment is most effective when combined with behavioral therapies that help address a broad range of problems associated with OUD.
In a variety of studies, people with OUD that are treated with buprenorphine have a lower risk of death due to overdose. Studies also show people treated with buprenorphine have fewer hospitalizations and emergency department visits, fewer possession of drug charges, fewer missed days from work and job-related injuries, and higher retention in treatment.
